I wasn't expecting to be a fan of the Iron Man movie franchise. I didn't actually see the first film when it came out because I simply wasn't interested (he was not a hero of my childhood; he was someone I associated with a much older generation), and I went in to watch Iron Man 2 in 2010 only to kill time before I had to meet a friend. (In fact I went in the cinema intending to use the time to catch a few winks.)
And then the opening scene rolled, and I sure as heck was not able to get any sleep.
Then I left the movie theater completely in love with RDJ's portrayal of Tony, and was just overwhelmed with feels about his chemistry with Gwyneth. So I made a beeline for the mall's video store and promptly bought Iron Man DVD. And I've been following their MCU exploits ever since. I've immersed myself in fanfiction, drowned myself in fanart and fanvids, and bought every single DVD (or iTunes movie) featuring the two so I could watch and rewatch every scene as many times as I wanted.
I have been shipping these two for almost almost ten years.
Why do I love them together? The short answer is that I find the tension between them addictive, and their eventual relationship just ultimately heartwarming. At first, it was only because the chemistry between the actors who play them was so palpable, one could cut the unresolved sexual tension with a knife. But later on, it became obvious that they have an energy that bounced off each other. After the first two movies, one can see how truly they care for each other, and the playboy who didn't give a whiff about true love found it in the one woman who had stood by him all this time.
It's the kind of romance that just warms my heart, because to me, it's a complementary dynamic that is uplifting and positive, a symbiosis that goes beyond mere emotional dependency. I was heartbroken at the end of Captain America: Civil War when they reportedly split up, but squeed out loud (inside the theater, no less) at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming when I saw them reunite. When Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Tony and Pepper are engaged, I am hoping the second part will furnish fans like me the lovely ending these two characters deserve. (EDIT: The forthcoming release of Avengers: Endgame has me scared for what could happen to them, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a reunion.)
I know interest about and surrounding them has waned since the release of the oft-criticized Iron Man 3 film, but I continue to look fondly these last ten years on what a beautiful, mature love they represent to me.
To me, they still represent the best romance in MCU. If that is not enough reason for them to deserve a fanlisting, then I don't know what is.
